Why is walking so good for you?
Walking regularly can:
- Keep your heart strong
- Reduce blood pressure
- Improve mobility
- Give you more energy
- Help you sleep better
- Help weight loss
- Meet new friends
- Help you feel good!!
Walkin' Wyre volunteer walk leaders can help you take up walking by starting you off at a gentle walk for 30 minutes. You can then progress to a brisker pace up to an hour as you feel fitter and more confident. If you have a medical condition that you feel may prevent you from walking, ask for your Doctor's advice.
The Walkin' Wyre initiative is Wyre's contribution to the national Walking the Way to Health initiative setup by the British Heart Foundation and Natural England. Additional funding has been obtained from the New Opportunities Fund. The initiative aims to encourage people who do little or no exercise into walking as a way of improving their health and fitness.
Wyre's scheme is a partnership between Wyre Borough Council, North Lancashire Primary Care Trust, and the Countryside Agency, and aims to encourage people of all ages to get out walking to improve their health. The scheme will train participants in the art of walking, starting off with short 30 minute walks on flat easy surfaces, progressing to 1 hour, over a period of weeks, on surfaces suitable to the individual participant.
Organised weekly walks are listed on our Weekly Walks page. Other scheduled walks are listed in the Walks and Countryside Events.
