Wyre Estuary Country Park
The Wyre Estuary Country Park situated on the banks of the River Wyre in Thornton is a BT Countryside Access for All national award winner, an England for Excellence Silver Award winner and a Green Flag Award winner from 2005 to 2008.
Many of the facilities at the Country Park are accessible to disabled people and a network of level surfaced paths lead the visitor through a variety of estuary and riverside views. The park provides an ideal place for a quiet stroll and for naturalists to study a wide variety of habitats and wildlife. There are picnic sites at Stanah, Cockle Hall and Skippool.
The fenced areas within the park contain trees and shrubs, most of which are native to Britain. Examples such as Alder, Ash, Broom, Hazel, Oak and Willow can be found.
The buddleia bushes planted in the traffic islands adjacent to the Wyreside Visitor Centre attract many beautiful butterflies in the summer, such as the Red Admiral, Small Tortoiseshell and the Painted Lady.
The River Wyre lies in an area of land shaped by the Great Ice Age. It weaves its way between small hills and drumlins formed by glaciers as they progressed southwards.
The large mudflats exposed between mid and low tides attract several species of birds including Shelduck, Mallard, Curlew and Redshank.
The Wyreside Visitor Centre which acts as a focal point for visitors to the Country Park houses toilets, exhibitions, refreshments, tourist information and a Countryside Rangers Office.
