  1. Start at the sea wall on the left hand side of the car park and bear left heading upwards alongside the River Wyre (note the shipping terminal at Fleetwood, on the opposite bank, providing a cargo link with Ireland).
  2. Immediately before you reach the first cottage (Sea Dyke), turn left and continue along the waymarked footpath. Proceed for a short distance then bear right along the track and follow the obvious path along the edge of the golf course. Follow the path uphill, past the waymarker until you reach the fingerpost.
  3. From here, follow the direction of the pointer and head diagonally across the course just to the left of the farm buildings opposite. Take the track downhill between the pond and the wooden buildings. Beware of golf balls when crossing the fairway!
  4. At the waymarker, follow the farm track, keeping to the left as you pass the brick farm buildings. Follow the track round to the right through two stone gateposts. Directly opposite you will see Hackensall Hall.
  5. Turn left and walk alongside the hall grounds. Bear right at the pointer (signposted Barnaby's Sands). The path now regains the golf course and the track continues meandering through agricultural land. Where two tracks met, continue straight on and follow round to the right along the edge of a small wood. The track bears left through fields and under the power lines. The ICI chimneys should now be visible in the distance.
  6. Stay on the track and turn left just beyond the overhead power pylons. The path leading off to the right goes to the nature reserve known as Barnaby's Sands. A visit to the reserve is optional. If you do not wish to visit Barnaby's Sands continue along a farm track with the power lines to your left. At the junction of five tracks turn left and head towards the farm.
  7. As you reach the farm (Coat Walls Farm) bear right and continue for some distance, passing two combined stiles and cattle grids, keeping to the left hand track.
  8. Immediately after the second stile, take the track to the left and proceed uphill to the next farm (Curwen's Hill). Continue ahead through the farmyard, past the house on the left until you come to a stile in the wall. Cross over the stile and head down the slope towards an old iron kissing gate which is situated in the left hand corner of the field. Ignore the newer gate.
  9. Proceed through the gate and turn left onto the disused railway track, formerly known as the Pilling Pig. Follow the track straight ahead until it eventually narrows and reaches a small wood with houses beyond.
  10. Continue down a narrow track then turn right at the end and continue to walk down the road until you reach a small opening in the trees on the left. Continue alongside the trees, between bungalows and into Parkway. Turn left and follow the road round until you reach the junction with Wyredale Road.
  11. Locate the signpost for the footpath between the houses, opposite Wyredale Road, which leads you back onto Knott End Golf Course. Follow the path across the course and return to the sea wall, past the cottage and retrace your steps to the car park.
