Karan Bowyer has always been an animal lover - which helps a lot when you're an Animal Welfare Officer.

Karan joined Wyre in 2006 after a career as a Vetinary Nurse became too staid with just routine consultations and operations to keep her occupied. She longed for a more exciting career and she found just the job at Wyre Borough Council.

Working with the police, dealing with dangerous dogs, picking up and re-homing strays, sorting out licensing for dog breeders, dealing with dog fouling, issuing enforcement notices, promoting responsible dog ownership, giving talks to schools and the community - that's just some of the duties that Karan has to deal with - and it's all in a day's work for Karan.

And one myth which Karan is very keen to dispel is that her role involves getting dogs get put down after 7 days.

Karan says: "This is a rumour that has been doing the rounds for sometime but it is just not true. Although we are inundated with strays in Wyre we keep them safe and warm in local kennels where they are looked after until they can find a new home. We aim to rehome unwanted dogs as soon as we can. Sometimes dogs have to get put down but only in circumstances due to ill-health which is very sad but unavoidable as the animal is in too much pain, or when the dog has become too aggressive and a risk to any potential new owner."

And despite being bitten - this has never made Karan want to give up. She says "These dogs are scared and many are fighting for survival so it's only natural they will be put up their defences."

If anyone wants to give an unwanted dog a loving home than Karan wants to hear from you. For a one-off donation of £30 to cover its care whilst in kennels, you can find man's best friend and give a dog a new lease of life.

Karan said: "You can visit the kennels and take a dog out for a walk or even home for a 24-48 hour trial to see how it would fit into family life."
